About

meMy name is Stephanie Sokol, and I love to tell stories. Graduating from Oakland University in December 2013, I completed my Bachelor of the Arts in journalism with a minor in music in 3.5 years, earning cum laude and departmental honors.

A people-person with a knack for communications and journalism, I currently work as Communications Assistant and Web Content Developer for the Oakland University School of Engineering and Computer Science. I previously worked as a Copy Editor/Paginator for Digital First Media. From these and other experiences, I have realized the impact social media and technology have on the world around us, as well as the need for adaptability to change. Being flexible and innovative is key.

As Editor-in-chief for start-up site The Pit Sports & Entertainment, I assign, edit and upload reporters’ stories, in addition to sharing all stories work through social media and writing my own stories, and recruiting new staff members. I am also the founder of blog Life’s a Cup of Tea, where I write about tea, style and whatever else is on my mind. So to say I’m a web junkie is an understatement.

While my journalism career actually began back at my high school’s newspaper, I learned a lot during my college career. In summer 2013, I interned The Oakland Press Arts and Entertainment Section, where I reviewed 11 concerts and wrote more than 30 news and arts pieces. From January 2012 to April 2013, I worked for The Oakland Post, as multimedia reporter and later, local section editor. A dedicated staff member, I was selected to attend the 2013 Winter Associated Collegiate Press Conference in San Francisco to take courses and accept two awards on behalf of our paper. I also reported for OU News Bureau in Winter 2013, which taught me the art of research-intensive pieces.

Learning about others is one of the reasons I love this field. There’s nothing I enjoy more than writing a great profile piece. People are fascinating and I love helping them share their stories. Though the industry is evolving, it is interesting to watch, and I am excited to see what’s in store for the future of journalism and communications.
